Pour Point of Petroleum Products by GOST

Description

Determines the lowest temperature at which the oil still retains a minimal ability to flow, which is necessary for calculating cold start parameters.

The pour point is the fine line that separates a working fluid from an immobile piece of ice or paraffin. Pour point analysis according to local standards (GOST Method B) is mandatory for domestic enterprises and machinery that require strict certificates of conformity. This research ensures that during a severe winter, the oil will not get stuck in the oil pan but will be sucked up by the oil pump before the bearings start working «dry» and failing. The testing methodology is similar to determining the solidification point but has a fundamentally different criterion for recording the result. The sample is preheated and then slowly cooled in a cryostat (UTZ-60). At strictly specified temperature intervals, the test tube is removed from the cooling bath and tilted at a 45-degree angle. The lab technician carefully observes the fluid's meniscus. Unlike the solidification point (where complete immobility is recorded), here the specialist looks for the lowest temperature at which the fluid is still capable of shifting in the tube, even minimally, within 5 seconds after tilting. This is effectively the last temperature point at which at least some kinematics and fluidity of petroleum products are still preserved. The result of this analysis is always a few degrees higher than the complete solidification temperature.
