Description

A fundamental test to evaluate the ability of an engine coolant (antifreeze) to protect various metals in the engine cooling system from corrosive degradation.

Protect the heart of your machinery from an invisible but destructive threat. The coolant corrosion analysis at the RENA laboratory is your guarantee that the cooling system will not fail due to corroded radiators, water pumps, or engine block passages. Using this test, you will know exactly whether your chosen coolant or concentrate can deliver the claimed service life without generating rust and scale. The test methodology (ASTM D1384) is a severe simulation of operating conditions: we assemble a bundle of six standard metal coupons (copper, solder, brass, steel, cast iron, cast aluminum) representing typical cooling system materials. This bundle is totally immersed in an aerated solution of the test antifreeze (diluted with corrosive standard water) and maintained at a temperature of 88 °C for 336 hours (14 days). Throughout the test, air is continuously bubbled through the solution to simulate the worst-case conditions of aeration and oxidation. Upon completion of the two-week cycle, each metal coupon undergoes a chemical cleaning procedure to remove corrosion products and is precisely weighed on high-precision analytical balances with an accuracy of 0.1 mg. The weight difference of the metal before and after the test is a direct indicator of the effectiveness of the corrosion inhibitors present in the antifreeze.
