A basic indicator of fire safety, recording the lowest temperature at which oil vapors are capable of instantaneously flashing from an open flame source.
Fire safety in a factory or warehouse begins with understanding the properties of your lubricants. The flash point by Cleveland Open Cup is the fastest and most accurate indicator of the presence of volatile and flammable fractions in the product. The analysis from RENA is vital for classifying the hazard of goods during transportation. And for used motor oils, a sudden drop in this indicator is the most effective diagnostic method for emergency raw fuel ingress into the engine crankcase, saving the unit from a vapor explosion. We conduct the test using a fully automated Cleveland analyzer (CLA 5). An oil sample (about 70 ml) is heated in an open brass cup at a constant rate strictly controlled by an electronic thermoregulator (from 5 to 6 °C per minute). As it heats up, the fluid begins to actively evaporate, saturating the air above the cup with combustible hydrocarbon gases. Starting well before the expected flash, a reference test flame is mechanically passed over the oil surface every 2 °C. The exact moment when the vapor concentration becomes sufficient for an instantaneous flash from the test fire source (a light glare that spreads over the entire surface of the cup but immediately extinguishes and does not sustain combustion), is recorded by the instrument's ionization or optical sensors. This figure is the official flash point.
